SYLLABUS:

Weeks of

May 15 and 22 [May 15-25] Chapters 1-3.

May 29 and June 5 [May 29-June 8] Chapters 5-7; Exam June 1, Chaps 1-3. No class June 5.

June 26 [June 26-29] Chapter 11. Final Exam June 29, Chaps. 9-11

Problems will be assigned for each chapter (see below). They will contribute 15% to your final grade.

We will do some computation, which means two things.First, make sure you have an RS6000 account, the secure shell client SSH, and xwin-32 for your PC so that you can do graphics using GNUPLOT or some better graphics program. This will require getting a license key from TCS.

Second, I will probably have you do some computation using FORTRAN (archaic but still the standard in the sciences) or, if you know it, C++. Begin to familiarize yourself with MATHEMATICA if you haven't already done so, as well as MATLAB. We have MATLAB running on a PC in the department. MATHEMATICA is available on the RS6000 although there are font problems. I will expect you to try to exploit MATHEMATICA or MATLAB on every problem assigned, where it is appropriate.
