Tulane University has long
fostered the arts in New Orleans, and from its founding, the Tulane
Manuscripts Department has documented the ways in which New
Orleanians express themselves through music, theater, and dance. The
following is a selection of the Tulane Manuscripts Department's more
significant holdings pertaining to music, theater, and dance.

Musica da Camera records (manuscripts collection 836)
1966-1991; .5 linear feet. Programs, newsletters, and other records
of a New Orleans early-music ensemble specializing in performing
music of the Medieval and Early Baroque periods. Researchers should
note that performance recordings and oral interviews are preserved
in the Maxwell Music Library.

Volunteer Committee of the
New Orleans Symphony (manuscripts collection 946) 1946
present; 15 linear feet (2 records boxes and 47 volumes). Scrapbooks,
minute books, financial records, and other documents of the Volunteer
Committee of the New Orleans Symphony. The organization was formerly
called the Womens Committee and it continues today as a support
group for the Louisiana Philharmonic under the name "Symphony
Volunteers, Inc."

Henry P. Wehrmann collection, Manuscripts
Collection 873; Wehrmann, Henry P. 1870-1956; Papers, 1868-1951, 5
linear feet (two records boxes and two artifacts boxes). Notes on New
Orleans theater and opera, manuscript sheet music, published sheet
music, business correspondence, programs, photos, scrapbooks,
booklets, and newsclippings of Henry P. Wehrmann, violinist, composer,
singer, and teacher.

Albert L. Voss collection, Manuscripts
Collection 856; Voss, Albert L. 1888-1964; Collection, 1843-1990, 10
linear feet (15 manuscripts boxes, 3 oversize boxes, 1 records box).
Programs, scrapbooks, cast lists, clippings, photographs, and
correspondence pertaining to New Orleans musical and theatrical
performances between 1843 and 1990. Includes some miscellaneous music
programs from areas outside New Orleans.

Leon R. Maxwell collection, Manuscripts
Collection 62; 1181 pieces, 1870-1957. Letters, papers, concert
programs, magazines, scrapbooks, and souvenirs of Maxwell and his
wife, Ruth Nottage Maxwell. Primarily pertains to New Orleans music
and to Newcomb College, Tulane University.

Simon Family papers, Manuscripts Collection
708, 1840-1960, 400 pieces. Includes clippings, receipts, and
advertisements for the "Suburban Gardens," a nightclub run
by Alvin Simon.

William P. and Alger Lancaster papers,
Manuscripts Collection 767, 1892-1965, 111 items. Business and
personal papers of William P. Lancaster, music teacher in Monticello,
Arkansas, 1892-1898, and Alger Lancaster, manager of "Lasses"
White Minstrels and of several theaters in New Orleans. Includes
theatrical promotional material.

Giuseppi Ferrata (1865-1928) papers
(1884-1925); Manuscripts Collection 773, ca 1,100 pieces. Chiefly
personal and professional correspondence of the Italian-born composer,
pianist, and educator who founded the Newcomb College Piano Department
in 1909 and taught at the school until his death in 1928. Includes
some music programs and original music manuscripts.

Virginia Downman Kock ( 1935-1995) papers,
Manuscripts Collection 917. Copies of music, placement tests, quizzes,
final exams, and other classroom handouts used by the University of
New Orleans musicologist. Also includes reports and musical analyses.

Cerou (Chevalier de) L'Amant auteur et
valet, 1740; 1 volume, B 306. Typewritten copy of play, with
introductory notes by A. G. Sanders.

Margarete Bieber (1879-1976) papers
(1907-1974), Manuscripts Collection 410; ca. 25 linear feet. Papers of
classicist, art historian, and author. Includes professional papers on
Greek theater.

Albert Valentine Veazie (1879-1917) scrapbook
and 4 folders (1897-1913); Manuscripts Collections 840 (3). Actor and
stage manager New Orleans, Nashville, New York and with touring
companies. Includes programs, clippings, photos, property plots and
telegrams.

Theater scrapbook (1902-1916), Manuscripts
Collection 816. Programs and clippings on operas and musical recitals
from various theaters in New Orleans, especially the Cresent Theater,
French Opera House, Athenaeum, Tulane Theater, Dauphine Theater,
Greenwall Theater, and the Lafeyette Theater.

Theater scrapbook (1905-1908), Manuscripts
Collection 840 (1). Clippings and playbills concerning theatrical
productions in New Orleans, particularly at the Tulane Theater. Of
note are Tulane Alumni Association productions for 1907 and 1908 and a
1905 performance of The Clansman.

Louis Placide Canonge (1822-1893) collection
(1890, 1941, n.d.); 5 items, Manuscripts Collection 738. Two
manuscripts of his plays, Un Grand d'Espagne, third act and Le
Comte de Carmagnola first act. Also a translation of Rigoletto
attributed to Canonge; and other materials.

Theater scrapbook (1900-1901), 1 volume,
Manuscripts Collection B 291. Clippings about actors and singers who
performed with stock companies in New Orleans, particularly the
Baldwin-Melville Company, Grand Opera, Metropolitan English Opera, and
Olympia Opera Company.
